Novovoronezh NPP-2 is a project of the Russian nuclear power plant of the new generation "3+" with improved technical and economic indicators and using the VVER-1200 reactor plant (the AES-2006 project), which absorbed the latest achievements of Russian engineering. The service life of such a power unit is 60 years.

Rosenergoatom Concern JSC was the customer for the design and construction of Novovoronezh NPP-2. Leading Russian organizations acted as project developers: OKB Gidropress was the General Designer of the reactor plant, National Research Center Kurchatov Institute was the research advisor of the reactor plant and nuclear power plant. Atomenergoproekt JSC (Moscow) was the General Planner. Atomstroyexport (ASE) Group of Companies was the General Contractor for the construction of power units No.1 and No.2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (units No. 6 and No.7 of Novovoronezh NPP) Trest SZEM CJSC, under a contract with United Energy Building Corporation OJSC, performed construction and installation works at power units No. 1 and No. 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2. The work of Trest SZEM  CJSC included the execution of thermal and installation work at the facilities: turbine building, reactor building, auxiliary reactor building, building for tanks of demineralized water and the dirty condensate tank with a volume of 1000 m3, waste water neutralization facility, diesel fuel storage, pumping station of oily effluent, emergency oil discharge tank, condensate purification plant building, modular pumping station and circulation water conduits of unit No. 1, tunnel for pipelines of responsible consumers, process pipelines trestle, etc. 

To perform the tasks assigned, Novovoronezh NPP-2 created a separate installation unit of Trest SZEM CJSC, which guided the operation of OEK-SZEM LLC and Sevzapenergomontazh CJSC. In accordance with the contractual obligations of Trest SZEM  CJSC, from 2009 to 2014, the main process equipment of the NV NPP-2 was installed, including installation of the K-1200-6.8/50 head turbine manufactured by OJSC "Power machines" with a generator (at the power unit No. 1) and other thermal and mechanical equipment in the main buildings and auxiliary buildings (separator-steam reheater, high pressure heater, low pressure heater, feed pumps, high pressure deaerator, condensate pumps of the 1st and 2nd stages, etc.), auxiliary equipment and pipelines with a total weight of 9,500 tonnes.

The inclusion, on August 5, 2016, of power unit No. 6 of the Novovoronezh NPP with a capacity of 1.2 GW into the power system of Russia with the issuance of the first kilowatt-hours of electricity became one of the most important events for the Russian nuclear industry in recent years, since this power unit is the most powerful in the Russian nuclear power industry, and it is also the first NPP block in the world built using "post-Fukushima" safety technologies. The power unit No. 6 refers to atomic units of the "3+" generation with improved technical and economic indicators that meet the latest requirements of reliability and safety. The unit is provided with additional passive safety systems that do not require the intervention of plant personnel in the event of an emergency, and also prevent the development of emergency situation. Power unit No. 6 will be tentatively put into operation at the end of 2016 after the development of 100% of the capacity and after acceptance tests.

Construction of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is the largest investment project in the Central Black Earth region, which will give a powerful impetus to the development of the economy not only in the Voronezh Region, but also in most of the regions of Central Russia. Construction of the first unit began in 2007, the second unit was established in 2008. Construction and installation works are currently underway at the unit No. 7. Completion of construction is scheduled for 2018.
